new media class: legacy

2022

The last 2 years have brought the urgency of humanity working together to tackle global issues to focus. From biodiversity loss, climate change, the challenges the whole idea of democracy is having with the hyper connected global stream of consciousness, where realities are created as much they are experienced. It is easy to look back with the knowledge of the present, and speculate with "what-ifs". But it is equally easy to lull in the bliss of ignorance, not thinking of what was in the past, as the present already provides endless amount of references, stimulation and inspiration. But, it is not for the media art and design to solve those global challenges. It is to provoke, and plant seeds for differen thinking. We can use the same straetgies to also other challenges, connecting the past/present/future. This semester we attempt to bridge time, and look to the present from the past, and project future from the present. The aim is to think of the ramifications novel ideas trigger in the society, how they spread, and make change in a concrete sense. We want to think of ways to seed ideas with interventions, installations and confrontations, but then also follow the thought in the possible future they might bring us. At first, we use the 30 years history of Digitale Klasse as a source of pressing issues of the past that previous generations tackled with and then reflect their impact or relevance in todays setting. Then we challenge the status quo with provocations and carry them to an imaginary future hypothetisizing their relevance then. The focus is on the effect on the society above and beyond the work itself.
