Shaping the Invisible

2025

in collaboration with Robin Woern

“The medium is the message.” With this paradigmatic statement, Marshall McLuhan directed our attention to the profound impact media have on our thinking and feeling—independent of their actual content. In a world where digital technologies continually redefine our understanding of communication and interaction, we seek to transcend the boundaries of traditional communication and explore novel ways of making the essence of an emotion tangible. We might ask ourselves: which stories truly deserve to be told? Which experienced emotions are significant enough to be shared? Our earliest years, in particular, are marked by formative moments inscribed in lifelong memories—spanning cultural customs and festivals, personal milestones, and special places that have shaped who we have become. These experiences are not simply anecdotes from a nearly forgotten past but carry an emotional essence that continues to influence us to this day. How can we convey this essence to others without relying on words or conventional narratives? This module invites you to explore alternative ways of making narratives experientially accessible. Equipped with new media and interactive approaches, we will investigate alternative forms of narrative communication that venture beyond the familiar. By deliberately shaping sensory modalities—such as haptic stimuli, temperature shifts, or movement—we aim to create subtle yet compelling experiences. The focus lies on creative exploration: How can we employ new media so that they evoke the emotional essence of one’s own formative event in those who engage with the work?
