a content network for the arts
The requirements for physical buildings and infrastructure in artistic educational institutions such as art universities are, in many ways, different from those of other institutions of comparable size. But how can these specific requirements be adapted to the digital realm, where both the peculiarities of digitality are taken into account and the characteristics of physical space are not simply projected onto the digital? How can the inspirations, artistic freedom and distinctive features of projects, contexts, and exhibitions from artistic environments be incorporated when establishing a digital infrastructure for this endeavor? This was conceived, tested, and established over a period of four years at the University of the Arts Berlin. The outcome is a university-wide, holistic data network for applications and contexts.
rundgang/index
udk/index is a digital archive and data collection of the digitally extended annual exhibitions of the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2021, students and faculty have been able to manage digital content of their semester projects and works via udk/content (an institute-specific instance of the developed medienhaus/CMS) and make them available or publish them for udk/rundgang. Published works remain accessible in udk/index beyond the immediate context of each year, allowing this part of the federated data network to be explored.

Separating data and designpublication · 2023
In this paper, we explore the significance of separating data and design, a principle known as "Separation of Concerns" (SoC), in the context of software development and its intersection with artistic education. We argue that this approach not only enhances the adaptability and sustainability of digital tools but also empowers educators and students by providing open access to data. This allows for greater creativity, collaboration, and the development of custom interfaces and applications that align with the diverse needs of artistic disciplines.

In addition to integrating newly created art and design projects into the university-wide data network content.udk-berlin.de through the annual exhibitions (udk/rundgang) or real-time collaboration (udk/spaces), the use case of the university’s existing archives was also considered. The aim was to incorporate their metadata into the network, thereby enabling potential cross-contextual connections between these diverse datasets. To pursue this objective, both a mobile and a workstation application were developed. These were tested within the archive of the former “Digitale Klasse” during a workshop held together with students and faculty over two days in March 2023.
