Here was a intercultural cooperation project which has taken place between the American University of Sharjah , UAE and the University of Applied Sciences Osnabrück. This projects focused on improving the situation of remote collaboration between two groups.
The result was a custom created speaker system which transfers the remote person and its movement back into physical space.
HERE creates an immersive 3-dimensional conversation space for discussions across long distances with many participants. Each group conversation member is represented by one speaker on the other side which transmits the voice and emotional non-verbal behavior expressed through light and movement.
The team is targeting groups of people who want to have long distance conversations. For example a meeting between two companies.
SPEAKER
Every speaker is representing one remote person. So only the voice of the represented person will be outputted by the speaker. Moreover every speaker indicates the current the line of sight of the represented person in reale time with a light as visual feedback. Finally the speaker is able to wobble around if the remote represented person is starting to get nervous or really wants to add his/hers point to the current conversation. This is detected with the microphone which is attached at the remote represented persons head.
The goal of this project was to create a more nature group conversation for remote collaboration. With this project the users are not focused anymore onto one single screen which represented the remote group via a webcam or one speaker than rather bringing back the conversation to the 3 dimensional space.
